Who You Know Matters

This morning, I had coffee with a childhood friend. He’s a very successful Real Estate broker and investor…and soon to be managing partner of one of the nation’s most high-end luxury market real estate investment and branding firms.

This firm sells individual homes in the $30-100 Million range and represents real estate developments in many of the top resort destinations—with celebrity and industry leaders as clients.

So I asked him, “How did you ‘hook up’ with the firm’s founder?”

After thinking about it, here’s what he said…

“My job 25 years ago with ______ (a well known national gym chain that he worked for when there was only a few gyms—now there are hundreds) gave me the opportunity to hang out with its founder—who now owns a professional basketball team. As a result, I met one of the investors and we became friends.

“From that relationship, I met another investor who I started doing deals with. He happens to be a billionaire.

“This guy introduced me to _____, the founder of this Real Estate Company and we hit it off.

“Then, he told me that he wanted to open up offices here in the area.

“…and that’s how I became a managing partner in the firm.”

What’s the take-a-way?

While you do what you do, always seek to create and maintain relationships with influencers—people smarter and/or more successful than you are.

See, being the smartest person in the room is not good for you. It’s good for those around you.

So pay attention to whom you spend time your time with because one relationship always leads to another.

The quality and the quantity of the relationships matter.

They can stagnate you or catapult you to a whole new reality.
