“My private advice to friends and key clients of late has been: get your money together, establish a lifestyle easily supported only by dividends from safely invested assets, and be able and prepared to opt out at a moment’s notice.
“The race is on to get out of the game before the rules become so unfair that you cannot possibly win.
“This may surprise many people reading this book. But privately, I have been telling my clients that the race is on, that we are stumbling toward a “dark period” in America when it will be better to have enough marbles to sit out the game.
“Have the home you live in paid off.
“Have enough cash to last your lifetime if all you do is eat principal, so there’s no income to be taxed at all. And by the way, the purpose of that business you own is not to employ people or support the community. Its purpose is to make you rich.
“And, a business is something to extract wealth from — not to put money in, not to accumulate trapped money in.
“That’s a mistake I’ve made to some extent, ignoring my own convictions. Don’t make it.”
My Take: Simplify your practice. Simplify your life. Eliminate anything toxic in your life, including people. Accumulate memories, not stuff. Life will slow down. You’ll have less stress and more time. You’ll be a lot better off.
