“Funk”… that feeling you get when you are uninspired, beaten down, and burned out.
I’ve been there.
In the last 20 years of serving this profession, I vividly recall 2 times that I’ve felt like giving up, throwing in the towel, and using my knowledge and skills to play a bigger game.
Both times it had nothing to do with practicing Chiropractors or the health of my business…but with the attitude of the industry and how it has successfully ruined so many well-intended Chiropractors who just wanted to make a good living caring for patients and their families…to a point where they just didn’t know which side is up or how to feel confident in their decisions.
Thankfully, I stuck it out and as a result, created ChiroTrust.
So how did I escape the funk?
3 ways…
#1 – I got counsel from successful entrepreneurs from unrelated industries. They made me realize that what I saw in Chiropractic is present in virtually every industry and that every industry is made up of good guys/gals, crooks, ego maniacs, politics, and injustice. This counsel helped me reframe, redefine, and refocus.
#2 – I changed my rituals – The where, when, and how I worked was re-sequenced and re-invented. I tackled my most important tasks in the morning. I purchased a mobile office (a sprinter van) and took some of my work on the road to places near my home that inspired me like Napa Valley, Carmel, Pebble Beach, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, and Yosemite. I still do this to this today…at least once a month. I added daily 15-minute afternoon naps. I quit my gym membership and started working out in the garage. I included intermittent fasting into my life. I enjoy some early morning coffee shop social time. I eliminated the television from the home.
#3 – Above all else, I hung in there. I didn’t quit. Over time, things improved. Actually, I take that back. Over time, I improved things.
