To this day, my dad wonders why I’m not so handy around the house.
In his mind, if I was, I wouldn’t get ripped off and I could “save a buck”.
Well first of all, hats off to my dad. He’s 83, still going strong, and from the sweat off his brow as plumber, he supported the family.
My mom was able to stay home, us kids went to good schools, and we all enjoyed some memorable vacations.
I had a blessed childhood.
But as a business owner, I learned early on that I really needed to spend my time wisely.
Not only did I hire people to fix, replace, and maintain things, I hired them to free up my time for my business and so that I can properly rejuvenate and relax.
My dad wasn’t self-employed. If he was, he wouldn’t have mowed the lawns, washed the cars, and run the errands. Sooner or later, he would have realized that the money saved by doing things yourself is trumped by creating an environment that supports entrepreneurial thinking and doing… including doing nothing at all.
See, doing nothing at all is just as valuable for practice growth as doing the right things both for and in your practice.
So, what are you doing that takes your mind off the things that you should be doing… including nothing at all?
